The Fall Okanagan Wine Festival

Okanagan_Wine_Festival.jpgIn a blink of an eye, the summer months have flown by and the fall wine harvest season is upon us. In the Okanagan Valley, wineries all across the region were greeted with an early harvest due to a late summer heat wave that allowed for the early harvest of grapes. And, on the heels of harvest comes the Okanagan's largest wine-related event: The Fall Okanagan Wine Festival.

Nearly 20 years ago, a small group of winery owners and those invested in the tourism industry in the Okanagan, got together to form a wine event that would highlight the local wine industry in the region. At that time, there were only a handful of wineries in operation and the BC Wine industry had not made a huge impact in the global or even national market. Developing a series of events to celebrate the Fall wine harvest, the first Fall Wine Festival featured culinary events pairing food and wine from the region and celebrated the grape harvest in the Okanagan Valley back in 1993. In spring of 1994, the festival organized and produced the first Spring Wine Festival, bookending the two busiest seasons of the wine industry and has since produced two annual events per year.

Now, with more than 200 wineries in the Okanagan Valley alone, these prestigious events have been ranked as one of North America's top 100 events and attracts not only residents from the region butWine_picture.jpg from the Pacific Northwest, the province and around the world. The fall, being the most popular of the two festivals, remains as the flagship for the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society and features just under 100 local events throughout the Valley.

What started as a way to bring attention to the Okanagan wine industry has truly turned into a celebration of epic proportions and brought all the best of the region to the table. Local wineries, growers, food producers and the like are turning up for the Okanagan's biggest harvest celebration. If you are new to the region, or perhaps visiting the area during the first few weeks in October, it is truly imperative you check out one of the many prestigious events taking place at some of the region's most impressive wineries and venues. Taste the best of the best this fall as the Okanagan celebrates with full glasses, the 2013 wine harvest! Cheers!
